For several years I worked with a Manfrotto 229 head . This head is great for architecture and very, very sturdy. But it's also heavy to carry.
So I bought a ballhead, the Redged RT-3 for my interiors. On a first glimp it looks great and firm. The first test was with a Canon 1D and a 70-200mm lens. Just to know the limits. You can really lock the ball very well even with that weight.
The quick release plate was a problem right away. I couldn't fasten it enough. Seems that the plate was not flattened really well. So it wobbles a lot. Even with a lighter camera system I use for interiors.
On the plate is a leveler which is perfect for interiors. But.... with a professional body like a 1D the leveler is covered. And it's a little bit small.
With a 70-200mm lens mounted on a 1D camera you cannot release the plate because the camera blocks the lock. You have to turn the camera in the lens mount to portrait to release the plate. But normally I would not use this setup in interiors so I can live with that.
My final verdict is that the ballhead is great but the release plate is badly manufactured. Even with a 5D camera it's to loose. I now have swapped the RT-3 for a Redged RNB-3 which I'm testing the upcoming weeks.
Summary:
Pro's:
- firm
- nice knobs
- tightening of ballhead good for heavy camera's and lenses
- leveler (only for smaller camera's like a Canon 5D)
- compact size of complete ballhead
- nice pricing
Con's:
- quick release plate rubbish
- not for use with pro camera bodies because of blocking the release and hiding the leveler
- you have to use a coin to connect/release the plate to the camera
My recommendation is not to buy this one but go for the more stable release plates. More about the RNB-3 in a few weeks.
